Drop the beat resident Jules with part one of ‘The Groove’, another exclusive mix for Drop The Beat. We caught up with Jules to tell us a bit more about the mix…
DTB: Wow, so this one’s been a while in the making! Or to be more precise, it was made quite quickly but you’ve since sat on it for quite a while. You’d better explain!
Jules: Ha, ha. Yeah, it’s been a while for this one. OK, where best to start… I’d been listening to a lot of really nice groove stuff from the likes of COEO and just collecting a few random bits of slower BPM music that just hit the spot nicely but it wasn’t like I had a particular mix in mind. More a case of just collecting for my own enjoyment. Then I came across Folamour’s ‘These Are Just Places To Me Now’ which kind of stopped me in my tracks a bit. I really, really liked it and just couldn’t get past it for a while. Every time I listened to some music I just started with this and then I just seemed to reach out to various corners for more similar tracks and quickly knew I had enough to do a great mix.
DTB. Great, but that doesn’t explain the wait? LOL.
Jules: Ah, well that was just down to me being indecisive I suppose. I was in the studio at home having a play around and just dropping a few tunes together to see how they sat with each other and hit record just so I could listen back later to decide on a rough playlist for an hour mix. Anyway, I started dropping a few tracks and each one just seemed to drop in really nicely, so after two or three tunes I’m well into it and after six of seven I’m really liking it…
DTB: Then drama!
Jules: Ha, ha. Kind of. In so much as I had to leave the studio so could not do the full hour, so I killed it after 45 minutes and nipped out. I got back in the studio an hour later and still feeling it, just kind of picked up where I left off, just checking more new tunes out that I’d earmarked and lo and behold the same thing happened. They all just fell into place really nicely, and this time for a full hour recorded, using totally different tunes to the first set with the BPM just edged up a touch to take into account some of the tunes selected.
DTB: Two great mixes, what’s not to like?
Jules: Well. Thing is, there was a couple of minor things in the first mix I wasn’t entirely happy with…
DTB: Perfectionist…
Jules: Well, yes and no. Thing was, bar those couple of little bits I was really happy with it. Also, they got played at a few afterparties over the coming weeks and each time I heard it, I liked it more and more, and the feedback off others was great too. In the end I decided that even if I was to re-do the mix and get the few techie things right, it probably wouldn’t have the feel of the original and so that was it. Decision made, It goes out as it is.
DTB: About bloody time as far as we’re concerned. As soon as we heard it, way back when, we were all over it! The Folamour tune is absolute class as you say but for us, Mink & Shoes is a beast – one that had completely passed us by, but man. Some tune that is!
Jules: Absolutely. Then straight into the David August remix of Good Morning, that was another I kept listening to on repeat, so it’s nice to get them all into a mix with some of the COEO tracks that first let me down this rather groovy path!
DTB: Excellent. So hopefully now that you’ve made up your mind we can get part two out quite soon?
Jules. Deffo. Let’s do it!
DTB: Aymen to that… let the groove commence!
