At a time when early techno music was truly underground, it’s impossible to overstate just how big this tune was on both sides of the Atlantic…
The brainchild of Ony Rodriguez and Mirey Valls, The Beat Club was born out of the Miami scene in 1988 and dropped big in the clubs whilst also scoring airplay. Even now, old school Miami music fans recount how “this track was THE shit, man”. Agreed!
In a fast evolving UK scene, this tune felt a bit of a game changer. A subtle but haunting vocal over hypnotic stabby techno beats. An absolute killer in the early rave / dance clubs at the time. Whilst many tunes of this era don’t really stand the test of time, this one does – and then some!
Interestingly, the Beat Club later signed for Rob Gretton (of Hacienda fame) on his Rob’s Records label, and remixes and edits would follow in 1990 produced by New Order’s Bernard Sumner. All very nice of course but not a patch on the original in our humble opinion…
Over thirty-five years later this tune still packs a punch, in fact we played it at the Drop The Beat Christmas Party not so long back… what a tune, and what a night!
A cracking addition for anybody building a collection of old school vinyl, with various copies available on eBay HERE.
