The Office for National Statistics (ONS) in its annual update on Monday (11 March) included vinyl records among 744 of the most popular UK goods and services it uses to measure inflation, which see’s them back in the shopping basket after 32 years in the wilderness!
The resurgence of vinyl has been on a steady upwards trajectory for many years now and whilst most collectors may not really pay much attention to the ONS, this is no mean feat for the little black discs which were unceremoniously dropped from the trolly back in 1992!
For old school DJ’s like ourselves this is a nice touch, as whilst we play out on digital nowadays we still retain thousands (and we mean thousands!) of 12″ dance records which we started collecting in the mid eighties… and boy, did we collect them!
Even though there was huge popularity in dance vinyl it was a drop in the ocean compared to chart, commercial and rock, and thus when the CD started to assert its dominance in the early 90’s vinyl had had its day. Pretty much overnight the industry collapsed and record pressing plants went out of business all over the world!
So, what were the popular dance / house albums of 1992 we here you ask? Well, we looked a few up and our pick would have been;
The Orb – U.F.Orb

The Shamen – Boss Drum

Utah Saints – Utah Saints

Mr. Fingers – Introduction

Opus III – Mind Fruit

Lil Louis & The World – Journey With The Lonely
