Mixes: House Call Exclusive Mix: Jules – March 11th 2024

Drop the beat resident Jules continues with a ‘House Call’ exclusive mix for drop the beat and my goodness, you’re in for a treat! We caught up with Jules to tell us a bit more about the mix…

DTB: Well, we’ve got to say it, there’s some epic tunes in this one, many of which are new to us. There’s a bit of everything, tell us a bit about how it all came together?

Jules: Yeah, it wasn’t necessarily planned that way but ‘House Call’ seemed apt as it stops off for a bit of all genres along the way; house, deep house, tech house, funky house, and nu disco. Pick the bones out of that lot!

DTB: Some fresh meat too?

Jules: Sometimes it can be hard work finding new tunes that really hit the spot. Sometimes you can go searching for ages without really finding anything, but you can’t force it. I think there’s a tendency with some to play stuff because it’s new, rather than because it’s good. Sometimes however you have a red-letter day, where quality new tunes just seem to drop in your lap and I had one of those days a few weeks back, where I managed to bag loads of new tunes that are right up there from the off and a good few have made it into the mix.

DTB: Fresh indeed and a bit of acidy filth to boot!

Jules: I’m always a sucker for some quality acid vibes, the Saccapoche Extended Mix is top drawer, what a tune! From this I went back to another couple of Qubiko & Denis Ago tunes and the Church Extended Mix is much the same… proper filth, as you say!

DTB: We have to talk about the Carlos Gatto Remix of The Smiths, How Soon Is Now. A big one!

Jules: Isn’t it! You may recall I sent that one in as a featured record a little while back. I dropped on it completely by chance, whilst trying to track down a Radiohead Edit. I was just about to give up when I came across it. It’s epic. I kept catching myself listening to it on repeat in the Gym… so that one had to go in.

DTB: And the Reinier Zonneveld Filth on Acid Remix of Everything In Its Right Place?

Jules: Oh Yeah, your in-deep with that one. No sooner had I found the Carlos Gatto edit I found the Radiohead one I was looking for. Sometimes it’s just meant to be! Bit of filth that one too, isn’t it!?

DTB: Absolutely, but there’s also a good dose of the funky stuff?

Jules: Ahhh, Groove P you mean… what a tune. Whatever you want to call it, Nu-Disco, Funky House, House… it’s an absolute banger. I could listen to that track on repeat all day… I defy you not to start shaking your stuff when that one comes on. Then into Sugar Hill, well, you’re not sitting down for that one either, are you!?

DTB: Fair point, well made. Final thoughts?

Jues: Worth a footnote on the Idealistic Remix I finish on. The original is quite an old tune that had completely passed me by until I heard a remix on an old New York DJ set that popped up on you tube the other week. There was just something about the lyric that hooked me. I’m still searching for the exact mix but there’s loads of edits out there to be getting on with in the meantime, and this one is the closest I’ve found so far so I thought I’d give it an airing to see how it sits. Work in progress and all that…
